Space Travel AR Style!

We took all the pages we had created about Space using the Strip Designer app and put them together to create a book using the Explain Everything app!

Then the students recorded the captions on each page and we saved the project to the camera roll.  I uploaded the video to Youtube so we can share it with everyone.

We wrote stories about a space trip using the pictures we created using the Spacecraft 3D app.  Each child  choose the spacecraft that they wanted to have their picture taken with and then posed with their choice.

IMG_0456

I took their picture within the app with the trigger activated and we used this picture as the spark to trigger some creative writing!

I also attached the space video using Aurasma to the creative writing project!

They wrote and they wrote and they wrote!

The trigger for the movie is on the cover of their project.   I will send home the aura I created in Aurasma via email.

They love viewing their work augmented reality style!

Dancing with Robots Fun!

IMG_0601

We had a great time this week with a new app called Pop Lock Bot.  It is an augmented reality app that lets the students dance with a robot!  IMG_0769

IMG_0746We took pictures of each student posing with their new robot pal!

IMG_0678

Even the school staff wanted to get in on the act!

IMG_0591

Then we wrote stories about our robot pal! We wrote and we wrote and we wrote!

IMG_3209

Then we made special robots to display our robots!

IMG_3216

We also made an iMovie trailer using the robot pictures and the video we made of everyone dancing with the robots!  We attached the trigger picture to the movie trailer with the Aurasma app.  There is a trigger picture on each robot thanks to some help from one of my volunteer moms!  I will be sending you the aura via email.  The trigger picture is on the robot but I will be sending a separate trigger picture home tomorrow for those who can’t wait for the robots to come home!  (like me!)

AR Alphabet Fun!

alphabet 8

We have been having a lot of fun creating a lot of cool things on the iPads!  We are working on an augmented reality alphabet book! Each of the students has chosen a letter of the alphabet and have collected a variety of things found in our classroom that begin with their letter.  Then we put the collection together with the trigger picture from the AR Alphabet app.  Once the trigger is activated we take the picture of the collection!

c page

alphabet 4

We are then taking the pictures and importing them into Strip Designer to create a page for our alphabet book!

m page

The children are also creating a page with text using Strip Designer.  The children are importing pictures they created using Doodle Buddy. AR Flashcards, and taking actual pictures using the iPads for their letter.

s2Some students created more than one page about their letter!

s3

We can’t wait to share them with you!  We are hoping to compile all the pages into a book with audio using the Explain Everything app!  Stay tuned!

Writing to Mars and Spacecraft AR Style!

IMG_0456

We have been having a lot of fun with a variety of apps I have found about space.  This one has become a favourite!  It is another Augmented Reality app called Spacecraft 3D.  This is an app from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology.

IMG_0459

You download a marker and then place the iPad over the marker and this lovely 3D image appears.  The best part is that you can take your picture with it!  There are 13 different spacecraft that you can view including the Curiosity and Hubble telescope!

IMG_0461

There are animations and information about each of the spacecraft!

We had fun looking at the spacecraft and choosing which one we wanted to have a picture with.  The children then posed with the image and these are some of the cool results.

IMG_0462

We also watched this video about the Curiosity landing on Mars!  The graphics are amazing and the children were completely captivated.  There were some great explanations of how everything was created just for this spacecraft!

While we were learning about the Curiosity spacecraft I found a cool NASA website that focused on the Mars expeditions.  There are a lot of cool links on the site including one that lets you send a postcard to the Curiosity spacecraft on Mars!  Too cool! Of course, we had to send a postcard!

IMG_0454

If you would like to send your own postcard to Mars I have added a link for the postcard site on our class WIKI page in the Science section!

Another app we have had some fun with is called  Space Journey.  I love this app!  It lets you choose a planet and then see it in relation to its place in the solar system!

earth planet

You can pick from any of the planets in our solar system and then see it in space in relation to the other planets and the sun.  Of course we had to try them all!

saturn

planet 3

We got a little dizzy spinning around our solar system!  You can move the planet around and see what it sees around it!

We are having too much fun with all the space apps! And there are many more!

Space Fun plus AR Math Fun!

ryleigh space

We have been working on a space theme this month.  The children have been using  the iPads to create these awesome pages about space.

We have been learning about the moon and the sun.  We watched a few cool videos on Brain Pop Jr. about the phases of the moon.

hayden marley space

I downloaded some neat space images from the internet onto the camera roll of the iPads.  Then I showed the children how to import the pictures from the camera roll into an app called Strip Designer.  It is one of my favorite apps.

austin garrett space

After that short demonstration I handed the iPads over to the children.

IMG_2835

They worked as partners and chose the pictures they wanted and placed them in the cells on the page. Then, with a little help, they added a text box describing the image.

IMG_2836

The children are fearless.  They pop in and out of the camera roll, sizing and re-sizing their pictures to fit the spaces and then deciding on the various options for captions and the accompanying text with ease.

I think the product looks amazing!  Grade One students can do a lot, can’t they?

We also found an really neat math app called Fetch! Lunch Rush.

IMG_2828

It uses augmented reality in a really neat way to help the students practice their adding skills.

IMG_2834

You need to download some pages with the number trigger images and cut them out first.  The students have to help find the correct amount of sushi to complete the addition sentence.

IMG_2833

The funny little dog talks them through the process.  Several children can play at the same time.  They choose the player they would like to be and then take turns solving the problems.  When they aim the iPad at the correct answer the sushi rolls appear in 3 D!  It keeps score and there is a bit of a time element!  Very popular!

IMG_2838

Don’t you want to play too?

Space Fun! AR Style!

space 3

We had some fun with this new app this week!  It is called AR Flashcards Space.  These cards are from the same company that made the Alphabet AR Flashcards.  They are very cool!  You need to print off the cards in color and then hold the device over the picture and the augmented reality image appears!

space 1

We have started a new theme about Space.  So these cards are a fun place to start!

We  also watched some of the videos Chris Hadfield made while he was at the Space Station!  They are awesome!  Ever wonder how astronauts sleep in space?  Take a look!

My favorite is this one because I love chocolate cake!

We have been working with the Doodle Buddy app to work on some math concepts and story writing activities.

IMG_2770

100 col 3

The children have been creating 100 stamp collections using the stamps.  They had to choose 10 different stamps and create 10 sets of 10!

100 col 1We also used the app to create one of the pages for our snowman books.

snowman plate 1

I finally broke down and bought the extra pages for the CoLAR app.  Very glad I did!

IMG_2783

This little guy is really cute!  The children have to color him front and back and add his face details!  It is amazing to see him pop up looking just like the drawing the children have just done!

IMG_2785We had a lot going on this week!  We also had our first Skype call to the classroom!  Will tell you more about that soon!  Lots of fun!

Dinosaur Fun with iMovie and Augmented Reality Apps!

IMG_0441

A little while ago we made a iMovie Trailer with our pictures that we took using the app Walking with Dinosaurs!

IMG_0432

I am hoping my attempts to share it with you using the Aurasma app are working!  The movie trailer files are too big to send via email so this is my attempt at a go around!  Hopefully you have found the link to this aura in the email I sent home!   You should also have the trigger picture of the dinosaur at home as well!

Follow the directions in the email to access the aura!  Remember that you must open the aura within your email.

IMG_0418

We had great fun slotting the pictures we took with the dinosaurs into an iMovie trailer slots and then figuring out what the words should say to go with the pictures!

IMG_0426

I have to admit that we are having entirely too much fun with these three apps!

Fun with AR and Gingerbread!

gin ar 3

We have been continuing to experiment with Augmented Reality using the Aurasma app.  I have been playing with this app and it’s a lot of fun!

I wanted to find a way to share a movie trailer that we made using the iMovie app about our Gingerbread house building activity we did with our buddy class in December.

gin ar

Using the Aurasma app I was able to link a picture of a gingerbread house to the movie trailer.  By opening the Aurasma app and then opening the link that I sent via email I have been able to share the movie trailer.  We have been using the iPads at school to share this with our class and our buddy class as well.

gin ar 1

It seems like magic!

gin ar 2

We have also been having more fun with the CoLAR app.

IMG_2628

I showed the children some more “magic” colouring pages!  In this one the bird appears and starts walking about and eating worms.!

IMG_2631

This is the picture of it on the big screen using the iPad and the projector so everyone can see!

IMG_2612

This one is a merry-go-round with horses to celebrate the Year of the Horse.  The merry-go-round has sound effects too!

IMG_2611

We also discovered that if you touch the rockets on the Fireworks picture for the Happy New Year picture that they shoot off and fireworks appears!  Too much fun!

More AR Fun! Twitter Too!

IMG_2578

I couldn’t resist passing out the new CoLAR augmented reality coloring pages!

IMG_2579

I know this is a Christmas tree but isn’t it awesome!

IMG_2577This is the one for Happy New Year!  I wish you could see and hear the children’s responses when we hold the iPads over their coloring pages!

IMG_2573

You can see the coloring page in the back of this picture.  When you open the CoLAR app and hold it over the picture the rockets and numerals pop out at you!  It is magic! Entirely too much fun!

IMG_2596

This is our hallway “twitter board”.  Each week we will be posting our classroom news!

IMG_2594

We also have a real Twitter account that I created last year.  All the blog posts are tweeted out on this page and we have started to tweet about events in our class! You can follow us on Twitter but as it is a protected account you need to put in a request to follow us.

Too much fun!

We got mail!  This is just some of it!

IMG_2563

I had forgotten how much fun it is to get mail!  The old-fashioned kind!  This is some of the mail we got from our Christmas card project! The children loved hearing about all the different schools and classrooms!  I am trying to figure out a way to show you our mail and show where it all came from!

Lots to learn!

Fun with Elves!

We had a lot of fun  with elves this month!  We have Sparkles, our Elf on the Shelf who teamed up with Gus, our resident ghost mischief-maker working together to leave surprises for the children almost every day!  They left messages, puzzles, stickers, suggestions for stories to read, and sometimes special treats to eat!  I managed to catch them in the act using a special app called Santa Spy Cam!  They built a castle using the blocks in the classroom at our Christmas center and filled it with candycanes.   The video above is the evidence!

IMG_2515

We also filled out applications to become elves.  I sent them home for Christmas.  Hope you enjoyed them!

IMG_2516

We also had a surprise visit from Santa Claus!

He spent a long time visiting with the children and told us a lot about elves.  Apparently their favourite food is candycanes!

IMG_2532

There were a few elves in his sack that tried to get out but he managed to keep them hidden!

IMG_2494

Our Polar Express day was a lot of fun!  Thank you to everyone for supporting this day!  We made hot chocolate and had yummy cookies.  We used up the leftover graham crackers from the Gingerbread house building to make some S’mores!  Very yummy!

IMG_2495

We listened to the story first and then we each got a jingle bell just like in the story.  Luckily, no one had a hole in their pocket!

IMG_1194

We also danced to these two Christmas Just Dance Kids videos!  The Grade Sevens came to help us dance to the Santa one!

This is the Jingle Bells one!  Lots of fun!

IMG_2460

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!  Have a Happy New Year!
