Fun with Talking Snowmen!

IMG_6286

We have been having a lot of fun with our snowmen!  We created talking snowmen by taking a picture of the snowmen that were created by each student on an iPad.  Then we used a very cool app called Chatterpix to add a voice to the snowmen.  With this app the children can have their snowman talk in their own voice! I posted a few of the videos here for you to view.  Just click on the play button!  Too much fun!

Within the Chatterpix app you can choose the picture you would like to use and then draw a mouth on the snowman.

The children then record what they want their snowman to say for thirty seconds. The app then makes it appear as if the snowman is talking with the recorded segment.  Very cool! You can save the video to the camera roll and send it on in a variety of ways.

I chose to use the Aurasma app, which is an augmented reality app, to link the picture to the video and then I posted them to our channel on Aurasma.  Now, when the children open the Aurasma app on any iPad at the school and hold the iPad over any snowman a talking snowman appears.

IMG_6294 The pictures act as a trigger image for the snowman Chatterpix video linked to that picture.  Each snowman picture brings up its own talking snowman video.

The children had a lot of fun listening to, and viewing each other’s talking snowmen! IMG_6292

If you have an i-device and you have downloaded the Aurasma app you can view our talking snowmen too!  You will need to follow our class channel to view our snowmen.

IMG_6281

Just do a search for mrsantonsclass in the search menu and you should see our class.  Choose to follow our class and you will be able to see everything we post!  You can either come into the school and view them here or watch this space as I plan to upload all the pictures to their own page.  Then all you will have to do is hold your i-device over the image on the screen and you will be able to see all the talking snowmen you want to!

Open House Fun with Augmented Reality!

IMG_5362

We had a great time getting ready to share our projects for our Open House evening.  The children practiced using Aurasma to share their projects.  We love using augmented reality apps to share our projects.

IMG_5371

It was fun to see how excited they were opening their projects and taking a look at their friend’s projects too.

IMG_5375

I loaded all the projects on our class channel so the students could view any of the auras we had created.

IMG_5374

Each snowman triggers the corresponding video that we created using Chatterpix.  You should be able to use the pictures on our Snowman project page to view all of the auras if you follow our channel.

IMG_5373

Our channel is called mrsantonsclass.  If you open the Aurasma app and search for our channel using the search option our channel should come up.  If you follow our channel all of our cool auras should be accessible.  You could also use the trigger images we created  to view our iMovie trailers about Dinosaurs and Space that we created using the pictures we created using the Walking with Dinosaurs app, NASA Spacecraft 3D, and our new favorite go-to app – Green Screen by Do-ink.  The trigger image is embedded on the creative writing pages.  We linked the movie trailers to the projects using Aurasma!  You should be able to view the movie trailers at home using the Aurasma app and the trigger image of the dinosaur or the spacecraft!  Just remember to follow our channel!

IMG_5363

We have talking dinosaur pictures and talking snowmen!

IMG_5386

The children also got a chance to share their books that they have created.

Here are a few samples!

We used a lot of different apps to create our projects.  Our favorite apps to create these books are My Story and Explain Everything.

IMG_5394

We had a great turnout for our Open House evening!  Thank you to everyone who made the special effort to come back to school in the evening to view our projects! It was greatly appreciated!  Thanks to Isaak’s, Abrielle’s and Rayva’s Moms for helping me get the refreshments ready!

IMG_5393

Rayva’s Mom made some awesome cupcakes for the event. Very yummy!

We shared a Photo Story about all of our projects too!  We hope you enjoyed viewing the projects!

Sorry I didn’t get any pictures during the Open House!  But we were very busy!

3 D Space Fun! Augmented Reality Style!

We have been having a lot of fun with our Space theme!  We created this movie trailer in iMovie using the pictures we created using a green screen app called Green Screen by Do Ink and the NASA 3D Spacecraft app.  We took all the pictures we created and popped them into the storyboard in the iMovie app and then worked together to add the captions!  We LOVE our movie trailer.  We have watched it numerous times!   We hope you will watch it too!

IMG_5265

We used the movie trailer to get our imaginations going.  We brainstormed together and talked about the things we had learned about space.  Then I encouraged the children to write a story about their adventure in outer space.   I printed off a colour print of the picture we created for each child and added it to a writing frame.  The children seemed to find it very easy to imagine themselves in the story when they saw themselves in outer space.  They wrote and wrote and wrote!

IMG_5267

IMG_5257

The stories are amazing.  I have put them up in the hallway.  Please come and have a look!

IMG_5253

I attached the movie trailer to the creative writing using the Aurasma app.  The rocket ship picture is the trigger picture for our movie trailer.

IMG_5263

If you have the Aurasma app loaded on your idevice and you follow our channel you will be able to activate the movie trailer!  Our channel is called mrsantonsclass.

IMG_5266The stories are amazing and a lot of fun to read!

Come and take a trip with our Mountain View Astronauts!

Augmented Reality Snowmen!

IMG_1533

We have been having a lot of fun with the app Chatterpix!  I took a picture of each of the snowmen and had the children bring their snowmen to life using the Chatterpix app.  They had to add a mouth to their snowman and then talk for thirty seconds as if their snowman was talking. Some children chose to speak as their snowmen and others choose to speak in a conversation with their snowman.  Some students preferred to talk about making their snowman with their family.  Then I took the Aurasma app to link the Chatterpix video to their picture.  Aurasma is an augmented reality app that lets you augment the viewing experience by adding another layer of participation to the object.  In this case it is the picture of the snowman.  To see the Chatterpix video you simply hold the iPad over the picture.  The picture is now the trigger image within the Aurasma app that triggers the link to the Chatterpix video.   This is called an aura.  I have created auras for each of the snowman pictures linking the pictures and the Chatterpix video.

IMG_1523To see the auras you will need to download the Aurasma app.  It is free! You do not have to join or sign in to see the auras.   Click on the little triangle shape at the bottom of the screen.  Choose the search option.  Search for mrsantonsclass.  You will be directed to all the auras that I have posted to that channel.  Choose the channel option at the top of the screen. Click on the link for mrsantonsclass and you will be given an option to follow, like, or share the auras.  You can choose to follow our channel by clicking on the  follow option. Now all the auras posted to that channel will become available on the device you are using.     Then you choose the option at the bottom of the screen that looks like a window.  Hold the ipad over one of the pictures on this screen and a swirling image that lets you know the aura is activating.

photo 1

You will then see the video staring up!

photo 2

As you can see I was able to access the aura on my computer screen while writing this post!

IMG_1521

Once you set up to follow a channel you will be able to access all of the auras that are created on that channel on that device.  You will need to set up each device that you use to view the auras the first time.  After that, you will be able to access any auras posted to the public channel when you use that device.  Sometimes I post things to the private channel.  Then you only get to see it if I email you the link. Lately, I have been posting everything to the public channel.  Their projects are just so much fun to share!

photo (1)

I have also created a special page for all of our snowmen iPad project movies!  They are all together in one space!  Just click on the link at the top of the page to see the wonderful work the children did using the snowman pictures and the Explain Everything app!  Enjoy!

I have also created auras for our dinosaur pictures that we took!  When you hold the iPad over the picture you can see the dinosaur Chatterpix  videos we created.

IMG_1306

photo

I will need to upload all the pictures to a page for you to view them.

IMG_1294

You can also access this aura from the creative writing exercise that we completed about the dinosaurs invading our classroom!

IMG_4650

I have created a page for the dinosaur pictures and the snowman pictures.  You should be able to see the pages at the top of this blog!  Just click on the page link at the top of this blog.

IMG_1289When you visit the page you will be able to activate the aura right away using your device and the picture on the computer screen.

IMG_1304

Or you can wait for the pictures to come home in the scrapbook!  I’m too impatient for that!

Even More Fun with the Snowman Project!

We have been working hard to finish up our snowman projects on the iPads.  We have added a new component to our project.  We have created a talking snowman!  We are using the app Chatterpix to animate our snowmen!  This is a really cool app that allows the children to make any picture talk!  Lots of fun.

We took a picture of the snowmen and then the children animate the picture by marking the spot on the picture where the mouth is and then they record their voice saying whatever they want their snowman to say!  They have thirty seconds to record their thoughts!  They are lots of fun!  Enjoy!  I hope to link them to the pictures using the Aurasma app.  Watch for it!

I have uploaded a few more of the snowman projects that have been completed!  Enjoy!

I continue to be super impressed with how comfortable the children have become using the Explain Everything app.  They have figured out new things that I haven’t even found or tried yet!  Did you see the hand that is pointing to the words!  Very cool!

I have to say that I really enjoy the drawing the snowman instruction pages!  Too cool!

AR Dinosaur Fun!

IMG_1306

We have been having a lot of fun with the Walking with Dinosaurs app.  This is a really cool augmented reality app that lets us pose with an augmented image of a variety of dinosaurs.  We use the photo booth section of the app to create these life like images!  The children choose the dinosaur they wish to pose with and what they want to act out.  Then I take a picture of them with the dinosaur superimposed on the picture. It looks real, doesn’t it!

IMG_1321

We used these pictures to create a movie trailer about “The Day the Dinosaurs came to School” using the iMovie app.  The children had a really good time helping me with the captions for the movie trailer.  It was a great taking off point for a creative writing exercise about what happened with “their dinosaur”!  They did a great job!

IMG_4650

Then  I used the Aurasma app to attach the iMovie trailer to their story.  I put the trigger image for the movie on their writing paper.

IMG_4452

The Aurasma app allows me to attach a video to a trigger image.  The trigger image I choose is the little triceratops on the picture.  When they hover the iPad over the image it triggers the iMovie trailer to open and play!  Please come in and ask to view it with one of our iPads.

IMG_4502

I will also be sending the trigger picture home in the next few days as well as the directions to view the image at home.  You will need to download the Aurasma app on your device.  This app is free at this time.    To view the trailer you need the link and the trigger image as I have not placed it on our public channel.  We used this app earlier this year for our At My School book we created on the iPad.

We have been having a great time with a new app called Chatterpix.  I used this app to create this little video!  You can add your voice and animate the picture to appear as if the picture is talking with this app.  Lots and lots of giggles with this one.

We have been slowly having the children take turns animating their dinosaur pictures using this app.  The children have to decide who will do the talking in their video.  Then they mark the mouth on their picture and start recording!  It is not easy to think of what your character will say for thirty seconds!   I have been attaching the videos to each  of their dinosaur pictures using the Aurasma app.  The Dinosaur stories will have two trigger images.  The dinosaur for the dinosaur movie and the picture of them and their dinosaur for their Chatterpix video.  Definitely a fun app with lots of possibilities!

Another Year of Fun with Technology!

IMG_1021

We have been having a lot of fun during the first few weeks of this school year!  We have had a lot of fun creating a book using the iPad based on a story we have been working on in one of our readers.

IMG_1006

The story focuses on introducing the school in the story.  We decided to create our own book about our own school using the iPads.

We had a great time travelling all around the school taking pictures of the important sites in the school according to the children!  Then we imported the pictures into an app called Strip Designer and added the text.  Then we imported these pages into another app called Explain Everything to create our book.  Then we recorded our voices reading the text.  We saved our book to the camera roll and exported it to Youtube.  We hope you enjoy our efforts!

I have also been experimenting with Aurasma again this year.  This app allows us to attach files to a trigger image such as a picture.  When you view the picture within the Aurasma app it triggers the attached file to display.  You need to follow our class on the Aurasma app to see the Aura.

To see our auras, please follow the following steps.

1.Download the app Aurasma on your device.  It works on iPads, and iPhones.  I believe there is also an android version.   The app is free.   It will ask you if you want to register.  You do not need to register to see the auras.

2. Search for our channel and follow it.  Our site is

mrsantonsclass or mrsantonsgradeone

You can do this by choosing the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the screen.  Type in either site name.  Our channel should come up!  (I have tried it on every device in my house and had my family try it so it should work!)   Then choose the Follow button. The text will change to Following.

at my school aura 1

(image from KPM Doodles)

You should then see a little snapshot of the picture above.

3. You can then trigger the aura by choosing the option at the bottom of your screen that has the four corners (the one in the middle).

Aim your device at the trigger image above on this screen on your computer and you will see the aura activate with a purple swirl.  The attached file should then display.   The attached file is the book that we created above.  It is pretty cool!  Now you have two ways of viewing the same book!.

IMG_3782

We tried it out this morning in our classroom with my iPad and the pictures!  Lots of fun!

IMG_3778

As we create other auras this year we will share them to this channel.

You can share the aura by choosing the share button.  You can share it via email or twitter.

I have also shared the book on our Twitter site.  Our twitter address is @mrsantonsclass.

I  have added the twitter feed to the blog on the right hand side!  You can see some of our tweets.

IMG_3783

Today we tweeted about the Global Read Aloud 2014.   We have joined with a large group of teachers worldwide who are completing an author study of the Peter Reynolds stories.  This week’s book is I’m Here.  We watched the trailer about the book.  Then we posted about it using the Global Read Aloud hashtag. You can see our tweet in the twitter feed on the side of the blog.  We are hoping to connect with other classrooms in the world and find out what they think about the books too!

IMG_3788

Isaak’s Mom has voluteered to help us with our Twitter page.  We have started sharing our news on the twitter board and will soon be posting our tweets on our Twitter page on the computer!

IMG_3789

Having lots of fun with technology!  Definitely something to tweet about!

Space Travel AR Style!

We took all the pages we had created about Space using the Strip Designer app and put them together to create a book using the Explain Everything app!

Then the students recorded the captions on each page and we saved the project to the camera roll.  I uploaded the video to Youtube so we can share it with everyone.

We wrote stories about a space trip using the pictures we created using the Spacecraft 3D app.  Each child  choose the spacecraft that they wanted to have their picture taken with and then posed with their choice.

IMG_0456

I took their picture within the app with the trigger activated and we used this picture as the spark to trigger some creative writing!

I also attached the space video using Aurasma to the creative writing project!

They wrote and they wrote and they wrote!

The trigger for the movie is on the cover of their project.   I will send home the aura I created in Aurasma via email.

IMG_3275

They love viewing their work augmented reality style!

Dancing with Robots Fun!

IMG_0601

We had a great time this week with a new app called Pop Lock Bot.  It is an augmented reality app that lets the students dance with a robot!  IMG_0769

IMG_0746We took pictures of each student posing with their new robot pal!

IMG_0678

Even the school staff wanted to get in on the act!

IMG_0591

Then we wrote stories about our robot pal! We wrote and we wrote and we wrote!

IMG_3209

Then we made special robots to display our robots!

IMG_3216

We also made an iMovie trailer using the robot pictures and the video we made of everyone dancing with the robots!  We attached the trigger picture to the movie trailer with the Aurasma app.  There is a trigger picture on each robot thanks to some help from one of my volunteer moms!  I will be sending you the aura via email.  The trigger picture is on the robot but I will be sending a separate trigger picture home tomorrow for those who can’t wait for the robots to come home!  (like me!)

The Day the Dinosaurs Came to School!

IMG_2758

We have had way too much fun with our dinosaur pictures!

I thought I would show you what else we did with the pictures!

brick dinosaur

I printed off the pictures of each child with their dinosaur on my color printer at home.  Then I made up a writing sheet with the title The Day the Dinosaurs Came to School!

We looked at all the pictures together and brainstormed about the pictures and possible things that could happen if a dinosaur came to school! And we had the pictures as proof!   What fun!  Then the children started writing their stories!  We have some amazing stories!

IMG_2747

I also placed the trigger for the aura we made on Aurasma on the writing page as well as a special bonus! The aura is linked to the iMovie trailer we made with the pictures.

IMG_0436

I sent the aura link home to everyone in an email already but now the picture trigger is embedded in the creative writing that the children did as well!  You need the picture to trigger the Aura!

After the children finished working on their stories, we used the iPads to trigger the auras.

IMG_2753

They all came running to see the first one!

IMG_2761

I have put the finished products out in the hallway for everyone to see.  The pictures alone are really cool and getting a lot of attention!  (So glad I found this app!) The stories are amazing and fun to read.

IMG_2763

IMG_2765

Adding the aura with the iMovie trailer we made with the dinosaur pictures adds a fun extra!  Sometimes, we have people who stop to look at the pictures and read the stories.  Then if I can, I have them use my iPad and have them try our “secret code” trigger  picture as well.  They are always surprised to see a picture start an iMovie trailer!

 Way too much fun!

IMG_2774

Still working on another project with the dinosaur pictures on the iPads….

Takes a bit longer and still trying to figure out the best way to share them…..

Stay tuned!
