Fun with the Snowman Project!

We have been working hard creating our Snowman books on the iPad!  We have the first few finished projects to share with you!  We hope you enjoy reading and viewing them as much as we have enjoyed creating them!

The initial sparks for the projects are the amazing snowmen that were created at home by the students with their families!

IMG_1524

They are fabulous!   To set the stage, we read the story The Snowman by Lois Elbert.  It is a great story about how a family saves up a variety of materials to decorate their snowmen.

I sent home the template with the children and several weeks later these wonderful  snowmen returned to our classroom!

IMG_1532

Then we started to compile a book on the iPads about the snowmen.  The first page of the book contains a photograph taken on the iPad of their snowmen.

IMG_1531

The children opened a project on the app Explain Everything and imported the picture of their snowman from the camera roll.  Then they added the title and their name using the text feature.

The children created an additional four pages to their books.

On one page. they had to draw a snowman and then label the snowman using the text feature.

We made one page about what they thought their snowman might like to eat.  They had to draw the plate with the items on the plate and label it once again.

The new feature to our snowmen books this year is on the fourth page!  It is a new favorite of mine!  The Explain Everything app allows you to record every stroke you make as you draw it and narrate your drawing as you build your picture.  I thought it would be interesting to have the children describe or teach how to build a snowman.  I think you will really enjoy them.  I know I can’t watch them without smiling!

The last page is, of course, about the author!  The children had to draw a picture of themselves and then add a few sentences about themselves.

The final step was to create a script for the first page describing the snowman.  The children had to complete a few sentences describing their snowman and their favorite parts of the project!

Then we had to have the children record their script on the first page of their book as well as adding a comment or reading their work on each of the pages of their book.  Then we saved the book to the camera roll as a video within the Explain Everything app.  Love, love, love this app!

Then I was able to upload the video on the camera roll to Youtube and import it into the blog so that you can see it.  I think I will also create a QR code for the video when we have completed them.  You know you have a group of students who love technology when they ask you to turn everything into a QR code!

Too Much Number Fun!

IMG_1477We have been working with place value concepts in anticipation of our 100th Day of school!

The children had a great time being the giant hand on the projector creating numbers using the base ten materials.

IMG_1429

The children have also been learning how to create sets of ten using a variety of materials as well as creating sets of 100 on the iPads.  Last week I found a really cool app for place value called Base Ten Fun!  You can find the game on the the ABCYa! Site as well!  It is fun to assign math practise and have the children cheer!

We have been working hard on our Snowmen projects as well.  The children have been creating books about their snowmen using the My Story app.  I LOVE this  app.  The children have become very proficient at it.  We can import files left, right, and center!  We are looking forward to sharing these projects with you at an Open House day soon!

Here come the Snowmen! And the Penguins!

IMG_1332

The snowman project is my favourite project of the year!  The snowmen are absolutely fantastic!  Thank you for supporting this project with such enthusiasm!

IMG_1331

They are all so different and it looks like you had some fun making them! These are just a few of them.  I hope to create a gallery online of all of them!

We are using the snowmen as a jumping off point for some writing we will be doing.  We are  compiling some pages together to make each snowman’s story!

We will be using My Story and Doodle Buddy to create the pages for the books!

We have already made the diagram page using Doodle Buddy! I love the detail and the colours!  The children just love drawing using the iPads.

We have also been working on a small mini unit about penguins.  After reading several books about penguins and watching the penguin video on Tumblebooks we working on a penguin research project.

We sorted a set of facts that I have compiled for them into four different groups.  Then the children cut them out and glued them to the appropriate category page.  This is the result!  The children are quite proud of them!

We are starting to work on place value.  We used the iPads and the app Doodle Buddy to learn about making 100 things.  The children had to make ten sets of ten different stamps using the stamp tool.

They had a lot of fun and it was a great way of reinforcing the idea of  ten sets of ten!

We have been learning a lot of different strategies to use to add.  The most recent strategy has been using the number line.  The children have learned to count on from the biggest number with counters and now they are using the number line to count on.  They like that it is much quicker!  I have introduced the app Math Bingo.

IMG_1378

It is a great app that allows them to practise their number facts in a fun way.  So far, we have only used the addition facts.  However this app lets them practise addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  So this app could be good for big brother or sister too!  You can also find it on ABCYah!   You can see that they use their number line to help them figure out the answers!  Eventually, they will know them by memory with enough practise!

IMG_1344

We have also been working with  some fun new counters playing Add It Up!  Everyone makes a story on their workspace and then they go around and solve their friend’s stories.

Here’s another one of the snowmen!  Aren’t they great!

Counting Snowmen and Snowflakes!

amyOver the past week or so we have been continuing to work on our Winter theme.  We have really been having fun with snowmen!  Some of the snowmen for our snowmen project have been coming in and they are fabulous!  We will be incorporating them into a writing project that we are creating with the iPads.  One of the first things we have done is to draw diagrams of snowmen using Doodle Buddy on the iPads!

snowman

The children first have to draw the snowmen and then learn how to use text boxes to label them.  Quite an operation!  The children   have to learn how to create text boxes, add text, and then move the text box to the correct spot to label the picture.  Then we take a screen shot of their product so that we can use it in our book project!

IMG_1243

The children have also been working on the app My Story to create a “how to” book on How to Make a Snowman.  We learned how to create a story board to show what we wanted to create and what needed to be incorporated into each page.  Almost all of the children have completed the books and I hope to email them to you this week as soon as they are done!  We had some help figuring out why we couldn’t email them which was really appreciated!  Thanks, Ryan!

We also created a snowman flip book that is in the final stages of completion and should make it home to you shortly!  They did a fabulous job! Four snowmen turn into many, many snowmen with three cuts!  They had a good giggle at all the different snowmen they could create!

IMG_1258

IMG_1259

We also made a little mini book about snowflakes to practise learning about plurals!

IMG_1326

During silent reading time we have been using the iPads!  On Friday, the children used the app The Monster at the End of this Book which is a fantastic little app.  I never get tired of it and it was a treat to listen to  all the giggles when the children were viewing the book.  I like this app because it highlights each word as it is being read to the child.  We use our headphones during silent reading time so all I can hear is the giggles!  You can see that they are spellbound by the story!

The Mitten for a Snowy Day

Today we read the story The Mitten by Jan Brett.  We have been very successful making it snow this year by reading snow stories and doing snow art.  Every time it has started snowing we have been helping it along with great results!  When it started snowing this morning we couldn’t resist working our magic once again!  We made a story map to go along with our story!  Each mitten contained a part of the story.  The children read the parts and put them in the correct sequence.  We then put a mitten in the middle of our “snow” that the animals could snuggle into by hiding an envelope behind a wallpaper mitten that was camouflaged in the snow.  We also read The Hat by the same author at storytime today.  Jan Brett has a great website.  It has some fun things for children to do.

I found two more apps that I like for primary students.  The first one is DoodleCast.  It is a cute little app that lets children draw a picture while narrating what they are doing in their picture.  You can then play it back and watch the drawing unfold before your eyes and listen to the story behind the picture at the same time!

The other app is great for encouraging the correct formation of letters in printing.  It only pays attention when you start the letter at the correct spot.  As you print the letters you also spell simple words and see children’s illustrations depicting the words.   It is called I Write Words.

Two fun little apps!

Finishing Up

Today we worked on finishing up our books.  We had some pages that needed to be tweaked!  I have uploaded all the books to the Pictello server and made PDF copies of all the books that were created.  After our Show and Tell Day I will email these to each family that would like a permanent record of their child’s work.

Our books have four pages in them.  Each page represents a project.  Each project explored different concepts and provided a variety of learning opportunities.   The books themselves take only a minute or two to view but they represent hours of  learning.  I think that the children really liked creating their projects on the iPads and are eager to share their efforts.  I am very, very, very proud of the work they did!!  And the best part is that they had a really good time doing it!  I bet they didn’t even realize that they were learning!

We are also sadly finishing up the time we have with this project.   We have had the iPads for five weeks.  I wish we could have them forever…..  They are moving on to the next lucky group of students and teachers next week.  We will have our final day with them next Friday.  They have been an absolutely fabulous addition to our classroom and our learning.   Boy, will we miss them!
