Fun with Talking Snowmen!

IMG_6286

We have been having a lot of fun with our snowmen!  We created talking snowmen by taking a picture of the snowmen that were created by each student on an iPad.  Then we used a very cool app called Chatterpix to add a voice to the snowmen.  With this app the children can have their snowman talk in their own voice! I posted a few of the videos here for you to view.  Just click on the play button!  Too much fun!

Within the Chatterpix app you can choose the picture you would like to use and then draw a mouth on the snowman.

The children then record what they want their snowman to say for thirty seconds. The app then makes it appear as if the snowman is talking with the recorded segment.  Very cool! You can save the video to the camera roll and send it on in a variety of ways.

I chose to use the Aurasma app, which is an augmented reality app, to link the picture to the video and then I posted them to our channel on Aurasma.  Now, when the children open the Aurasma app on any iPad at the school and hold the iPad over any snowman a talking snowman appears.

IMG_6294 The pictures act as a trigger image for the snowman Chatterpix video linked to that picture.  Each snowman picture brings up its own talking snowman video.

The children had a lot of fun listening to, and viewing each other’s talking snowmen! IMG_6292

If you have an i-device and you have downloaded the Aurasma app you can view our talking snowmen too!  You will need to follow our class channel to view our snowmen.

IMG_6281

Just do a search for mrsantonsclass in the search menu and you should see our class.  Choose to follow our class and you will be able to see everything we post!  You can either come into the school and view them here or watch this space as I plan to upload all the pictures to their own page.  Then all you will have to do is hold your i-device over the image on the screen and you will be able to see all the talking snowmen you want to!

Augmented Reality Snowmen!

IMG_1533

We have been having a lot of fun with the app Chatterpix!  I took a picture of each of the snowmen and had the children bring their snowmen to life using the Chatterpix app.  They had to add a mouth to their snowman and then talk for thirty seconds as if their snowman was talking. Some children chose to speak as their snowmen and others choose to speak in a conversation with their snowman.  Some students preferred to talk about making their snowman with their family.  Then I took the Aurasma app to link the Chatterpix video to their picture.  Aurasma is an augmented reality app that lets you augment the viewing experience by adding another layer of participation to the object.  In this case it is the picture of the snowman.  To see the Chatterpix video you simply hold the iPad over the picture.  The picture is now the trigger image within the Aurasma app that triggers the link to the Chatterpix video.   This is called an aura.  I have created auras for each of the snowman pictures linking the pictures and the Chatterpix video.

IMG_1523To see the auras you will need to download the Aurasma app.  It is free! You do not have to join or sign in to see the auras.   Click on the little triangle shape at the bottom of the screen.  Choose the search option.  Search for mrsantonsclass.  You will be directed to all the auras that I have posted to that channel.  Choose the channel option at the top of the screen. Click on the link for mrsantonsclass and you will be given an option to follow, like, or share the auras.  You can choose to follow our channel by clicking on the  follow option. Now all the auras posted to that channel will become available on the device you are using.     Then you choose the option at the bottom of the screen that looks like a window.  Hold the ipad over one of the pictures on this screen and a swirling image that lets you know the aura is activating.

photo 1

You will then see the video staring up!

photo 2

As you can see I was able to access the aura on my computer screen while writing this post!

IMG_1521

Once you set up to follow a channel you will be able to access all of the auras that are created on that channel on that device.  You will need to set up each device that you use to view the auras the first time.  After that, you will be able to access any auras posted to the public channel when you use that device.  Sometimes I post things to the private channel.  Then you only get to see it if I email you the link. Lately, I have been posting everything to the public channel.  Their projects are just so much fun to share!

I have also created a special page for all of our snowmen iPad project movies!  They are all together in one space!  Just click on the link at the top of the page to see the wonderful work the children did using the snowman pictures and the Explain Everything app!  Enjoy!

I have also created auras for our dinosaur pictures that we took!  When you hold the iPad over the picture you can see the dinosaur Chatterpix  videos we created.

I will need to upload all the pictures to a page for you to view them.

IMG_1294

You can also access this aura from the creative writing exercise that we completed about the dinosaurs invading our classroom!

IMG_4650

I have created a page for the dinosaur pictures and the snowman pictures.  You should be able to see the pages at the top of this blog!  Just click on the page link at the top of this blog.

IMG_1289When you visit the page you will be able to activate the aura right away using your device and the picture on the computer screen.

IMG_1304

Or you can wait for the pictures to come home in the scrapbook!  I’m too impatient for that!

Even More Fun with the Snowman Project!

We have been working hard to finish up our snowman projects on the iPads.  We have added a new component to our project.  We have created a talking snowman!  We are using the app Chatterpix to animate our snowmen!  This is a really cool app that allows the children to make any picture talk!  Lots of fun.

We took a picture of the snowmen and then the children animate the picture by marking the spot on the picture where the mouth is and then they record their voice saying whatever they want their snowman to say!  They have thirty seconds to record their thoughts!  They are lots of fun!  Enjoy!  I hope to link them to the pictures using the Aurasma app.  Watch for it!

I have uploaded a few more of the snowman projects that have been completed!  Enjoy!

I continue to be super impressed with how comfortable the children have become using the Explain Everything app.  They have figured out new things that I haven’t even found or tried yet!  Did you see the hand that is pointing to the words!  Very cool!

I have to say that I really enjoy the drawing the snowman instruction pages!  Too cool!

Fun with the Snowman Project!

We have been working hard creating our Snowman books on the iPad!  We have the first few finished projects to share with you!  We hope you enjoy reading and viewing them as much as we have enjoyed creating them!

IMG_1523

The initial sparks for the projects are the amazing snowmen that were created at home by the students with their families!

IMG_1524

They are fabulous!   To set the stage, we read the story The Snowman by Lois Elbert.  It is a great story about how a family saves up a variety of materials to decorate their snowmen.

IMG_1533

I sent home the template with the children and several weeks later these wonderful  snowmen returned to our classroom!

IMG_1532

Then we started to compile a book on the iPads about the snowmen.  The first page of the book contains a photograph taken on the iPad of their snowmen.

IMG_1531

The children opened a project on the app Explain Everything and imported the picture of their snowman from the camera roll.  Then they added the title and their name using the text feature.

The children created an additional four pages to their books.

On one page. they had to draw a snowman and then label the snowman using the text feature.

We made one page about what they thought their snowman might like to eat.  They had to draw the plate with the items on the plate and label it once again.

The new feature to our snowmen books this year is on the fourth page!  It is a new favorite of mine!  The Explain Everything app allows you to record every stroke you make as you draw it and narrate your drawing as you build your picture.  I thought it would be interesting to have the children describe or teach how to build a snowman.  I think you will really enjoy them.  I know I can’t watch them without smiling!

The last page is, of course, about the author!  The children had to draw a picture of themselves and then add a few sentences about themselves.

The final step was to create a script for the first page describing the snowman.  The children had to complete a few sentences describing their snowman and their favorite parts of the project!

Then we had to have the children record their script on the first page of their book as well as adding a comment or reading their work on each of the pages of their book.  Then we saved the book to the camera roll as a video within the Explain Everything app.  Love, love, love this app!

Then I was able to upload the video on the camera roll to Youtube and import it into the blog so that you can see it.  I think I will also create a QR code for the video when we have completed them.  You know you have a group of students who love technology when they ask you to turn everything into a QR code!

Space Fun! AR Style!

space 3

We had some fun with this new app this week!  It is called AR Flashcards Space.  These cards are from the same company that made the Alphabet AR Flashcards.  They are very cool!  You need to print off the cards in color and then hold the device over the picture and the augmented reality image appears!

space 1

We have started a new theme about Space.  So these cards are a fun place to start!

We  also watched some of the videos Chris Hadfield made while he was at the Space Station!  They are awesome!  Ever wonder how astronauts sleep in space?  Take a look!

My favorite is this one because I love chocolate cake!

We have been working with the Doodle Buddy app to work on some math concepts and story writing activities.

100 col 3

The children have been creating 100 stamp collections using the stamps.  They had to choose 10 different stamps and create 10 sets of 10!

100 col 1We also used the app to create one of the pages for our snowman books.

snowman plate 1

I finally broke down and bought the extra pages for the CoLAR app.  Very glad I did!

IMG_2783

This little guy is really cute!  The children have to color him front and back and add his face details!  It is amazing to see him pop up looking just like the drawing the children have just done!

IMG_2785We had a lot going on this week!  We also had our first Skype call to the classroom!  Will tell you more about that soon!  Lots of fun!

Blogging Fun!

IMG_0044

The students are having a great time exploring our new app called Letter School!  Really popular app!

IMG_0042

The great thing is that the animations are fabulous. As the children work through several repeats the animations keep changing!  Very cool!

IMG_0046

I have added a few new pages to the blog.  We now have our very own gallery of the wonderful snowmen.  If you check at the top of the blog you will find the Snowmen Gallery.

IMG_1703

I think I have almost all of them.  The missing ones should be there shortly!  I thought that the snowmen were just awesome and wanted to display all of them.  I hope you approve!

IMG_1335

I am also planning to start our spelling tests.  I have created a new page and joined a website called Spelling City.  You should see the page at the top of the blog.

spelling city

If you click on the link on the page it will take you to our class home page on their site.  The first list is posted on the site.  The children can practise the words and there are some games such as word searches that they can do to help them practise.   This is new for me and I am excited about the possibilities for the children to practise their words online!

kidblog

Please make sure that you check in on the student blog site.  This week our big buddies helped up personalize their sites.  The children got to pick their own template and avatar!  I know they are very proud of them.  You will need to ask them for the password to view the contents of their sites.  We posted a new entry about Twin Day this week.  The Kid Blog site graciously increased our storage space!  We had run out!  We kept trying to post entries with pictures that refused to load until I realized that we had a storage problem.  The people at Kid Blog were very helpful and we are very appreciative!

courtlynd blog

I would like to thank Courtlynd, one of our Grade Four big buddies, for her help with our student blogs on the Kid Blog site!  She has become quite a blogging expert and was an invaluable help to me when we were trying to figure out how to get the permissions set so the children could personalize their blogs!   Nice to know I have an expert to consult with about blogging!

Sharing Time!

Yesterday was the last day of Project iPad!  To celebrate our journey we hosted an open house for our parents.  We had a stellar turnout!  Lots of parents and even grandparents came to see our project and we had a great time sharing our learning with them!

The children have worked hard on a Pictello book about the snowman they created with their families.  The books are very cool but what really makes them special is that each child narrated their own stories.  Listening to them read their stories themselves always brings a smile…  I have managed to load all the stories onto the Pictello server.  I will be emailing the corresponding codes as soon as possible.  If you have an iPad and the Pictello app loaded on your ipad you will be able to download your child’s story and keep it!  I have also downloaded a PDF file for each book that will be going out via email as soon as possible.  Unfortunately the audio component is not part of this file.  But you will still have all the pages for the book!  It takes a little time to copy in all those email addresses so please be patient!

To begin our celebration we viewed a little movie that I was able to create on a neat product called PhotoStory3.  This program lets you take the photographs that you have taken and put them all together into a slide show.  You can add comments and put it all to music for a really cool finished product.  I had used it before for our school mural project so this time I found it a little easier to put together.  Not such a steep learning curve this time!  The children loved seeing all their projects and it was fun listening to their reactions as they took a trip down memory lane!  Apparently it is possible to email the photostory.  I will have to try that!

Then the children shared their stories with their parents.  I hope they enjoyed them as much as I did!  Then the children taught their parents how to use the iPads.  We gave the parents the snowman labelling project to attempt.  They were great students!! Here are some of their attempts!  I had so many neat snowmen that I will have to save some for future posts!

The children also got to share their favourite apps with their parents.  It is difficult to decide which one would be their favourite.  They certainly seemed to enjoy them all!

We also repeated our buddy picture project with the parents.  The parents and students took a picture of themselves using the camera.  Then they imported the picture into the Puzzlemaker app, created a puzzle using that image, and then proceeded to complete the puzzle.

The forty five minute long Open House time just flew by!  I would like to thank the parents and extended families for coming!  There were lots of adults so every child got to share their story with someone and no one felt left out!  I know it is very difficult to come in the middle of the day to an event.  Please know that it was greatly appreciated by both the students and myself!

After school I had to drop the iPads off so that they could move on to the next lucky school…  What a great experience we had with them!  I know that we will really miss them.

I am hoping to continue to explore the use of the iPad in the classroom albeit on a significantly smaller scale!   We will continue to try to find ways to use it in the classroom and hopefully continue to share these efforts on our blog….  So please stay tuned!
