Fun with Talking Snowmen!

IMG_6286

We have been having a lot of fun with our snowmen!  We created talking snowmen by taking a picture of the snowmen that were created by each student on an iPad.  Then we used a very cool app called Chatterpix to add a voice to the snowmen.  With this app the children can have their snowman talk in their own voice! I posted a few of the videos here for you to view.  Just click on the play button!  Too much fun!

Within the Chatterpix app you can choose the picture you would like to use and then draw a mouth on the snowman.

The children then record what they want their snowman to say for thirty seconds. The app then makes it appear as if the snowman is talking with the recorded segment.  Very cool! You can save the video to the camera roll and send it on in a variety of ways.

I chose to use the Aurasma app, which is an augmented reality app, to link the picture to the video and then I posted them to our channel on Aurasma.  Now, when the children open the Aurasma app on any iPad at the school and hold the iPad over any snowman a talking snowman appears.

IMG_6294 The pictures act as a trigger image for the snowman Chatterpix video linked to that picture.  Each snowman picture brings up its own talking snowman video.

The children had a lot of fun listening to, and viewing each other’s talking snowmen! IMG_6292

If you have an i-device and you have downloaded the Aurasma app you can view our talking snowmen too!  You will need to follow our class channel to view our snowmen.

IMG_6281

Just do a search for mrsantonsclass in the search menu and you should see our class.  Choose to follow our class and you will be able to see everything we post!  You can either come into the school and view them here or watch this space as I plan to upload all the pictures to their own page.  Then all you will have to do is hold your i-device over the image on the screen and you will be able to see all the talking snowmen you want to!

Dinosaur Fun!

IMG_6004

We have been working on creating stories on the iPad using two different apps.  We are creating the pictures using an augmented reality app called Walking with Dinosaurs.  It lets us put a 3D image of a dinosaur in a photo.  It is amazing because it looks very real!

IMG_6002

The children are using the Walking with Dinosaurs app using the Photo Booth option.  They choose the dinosaur they would like to have in their story and then pose the dinosaur with something in the classroom.  We have dinosaurs reading books, playing with Lego, playing with the toy dinosaurs, and hanging out!  The children take the picture and save it to the camera roll.  Then they open the My Story app and import the picture from the camera roll into their story.

IMG_6001

We are almost finished our dinosaur stories.  The children have been taking turns going to our “recording studio” to record themselves reading the pages of their books!  We are almost ready to share! They will be posted on this blog very soon!

We have also worked on a dinosaur research project.  We learned all about the Apatosaurus (also known as Brontosaurus).  The children sorted the facts about Apatosaurus into four categories.  After we read through all the facts the children decided which category was the best fit for the fact.

IMG_5990

The children glued the facts onto the correct category sheet and we created our dinosaur reports!

IMG_5988

Check them out to learn some cool facts about Apatosaurus!

Fun with Penguins!

IMG_5929

We have been having a great time learning about penguins!  The children have been learning how to sort different facts about penguins into categories.  They divided the facts into four different categories: What They Look Like, What They Eat, About the Babies, and Cool Facts.

IMG_5922

We observed the penguins in real time on webcams located at the Vancouver Aquarium and SeaWorld, Orlando.  It was fun to watch their antics.  Some of them were very loud!  One penguin likes to play peek-a-boo with the camera.

IMG_5995

We added a QR code to our penguin reports that links to the Vancouver Aquarium penguin cam!  We use our Scan app to scan the code and it takes us directly to the Penguin webcam!

IMG_5991

It almost seems like magic!

Fun with Pumpkins!

IMG_2258

We have been having some fun with a cool augmented reality app called Quiver (used to be known as CoLAR).  I downloaded the trigger image page which is a colouring page found on their website.  I had the children colour the page and then used our smart board to share what happens when you hold an iPad with the app open over the trigger image of the pumpkins.  The pumpkins get up and dance around!  Too much fun!

You can find additional pictures on their website.  You can download the trigger images and experiment!  There are a variety of trigger images to choose from with ranging in subject area.  Some of the images are free.  Some of the images require you to download the images within the app for a small fee.

We hope you enjoyed the little booklet we made to help us practise our Halloween or Fall vocabulary using the words we are trying to practice!  The children had fun making the funky covers!

IMG_5615

We have also been practising our new sight vocabulary words using our word bank bags.  The children cut out the words and then try to make up sentences using the words.  You should have received a small ziplock bag with a Halloween or Fall sticker on it with a lot of small pieces of paper with words on them last week.  I hope the children taught you how to play with them!  I took a few pictures of some of the sentences the children have created using these words.  The object of the exercise is to create as many sentences as you can!  We have the children create sentences and then we go around the classroom and try to read each other’s sentences!  Hopefully you have had some fun creating sentences at home.  It is a great way to practise the Dolch words in context!  Please take pictures of the sentences you create at home and with your permission I will post them on our blog!  Just email the pictures to me!

IMG_5606

Here are the first sentences emailed to me!  Yeah!

Fun with Bat Facts!

IMG_5620

We have had a great time during the last few weeks working on a variety of projects.  One of them has been a mini-unit about bats.  We watched a movie about the flying fox bat that I found on the National Geographic kids channel.  We also read a few books about bats to find out about all the different kinds of bats.  We made a little poem by filling in the blanks with our favourite bats.  Then we made our bat covers!

IMG_5617

I created a QR code to attach to the project!  When the students scan the code using the iPads the video we watched about the flying foxes comes up.  The urrl for the video is attached to the QR code.  I use a QR code generator that I found online to attach the urrl to a code which is generated and I then print off!

IMG_5617

The children have been asking me to add QR codes to everything now!

IMG_5607

I couldn’t get a good picture of the QR code in action because it linked to the video too fast!  Good WIFI!

IMG_5618

We use an app called Scan to view the QR codes!  If you have Scan or a QR code reader on your idevice you can view the video we watched too! Have fun!

Open House Fun with Augmented Reality!

IMG_5362

We had a great time getting ready to share our projects for our Open House evening.  The children practiced using Aurasma to share their projects.  We love using augmented reality apps to share our projects.

IMG_5371

It was fun to see how excited they were opening their projects and taking a look at their friend’s projects too.

IMG_5375

I loaded all the projects on our class channel so the students could view any of the auras we had created.

IMG_5374

Each snowman triggers the corresponding video that we created using Chatterpix.  You should be able to use the pictures on our Snowman project page to view all of the auras if you follow our channel.

IMG_5373

Our channel is called mrsantonsclass.  If you open the Aurasma app and search for our channel using the search option our channel should come up.  If you follow our channel all of our cool auras should be accessible.  You could also use the trigger images we created  to view our iMovie trailers about Dinosaurs and Space that we created using the pictures we created using the Walking with Dinosaurs app, NASA Spacecraft 3D, and our new favorite go-to app – Green Screen by Do-ink.  The trigger image is embedded on the creative writing pages.  We linked the movie trailers to the projects using Aurasma!  You should be able to view the movie trailers at home using the Aurasma app and the trigger image of the dinosaur or the spacecraft!  Just remember to follow our channel!

IMG_5363

We have talking dinosaur pictures and talking snowmen!

IMG_5386

The children also got a chance to share their books that they have created.

Here are a few samples!

We used a lot of different apps to create our projects.  Our favorite apps to create these books are My Story and Explain Everything.

IMG_5394

We had a great turnout for our Open House evening!  Thank you to everyone who made the special effort to come back to school in the evening to view our projects! It was greatly appreciated!  Thanks to Isaak’s, Abrielle’s and Rayva’s Moms for helping me get the refreshments ready!

IMG_5393

Rayva’s Mom made some awesome cupcakes for the event. Very yummy!

We shared a Photo Story about all of our projects too!  We hope you enjoyed viewing the projects!

Sorry I didn’t get any pictures during the Open House!  But we were very busy!

Our Alphabet Book! Augmented Reality Style!

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Is-qWOv3_AY?rel=0&showinfo=0]

This is the alphabet book that we created this year using augmented reality!  We think it is pretty cool!

s_is_for

We used a combination of apps to create this project.  The children have been using the app AR Alphabet Flashcards this year a lot!

IMG_0635

They love trying to hold the augmented images that appear when you hold the iPad over the trigger images.

words_for_a

We created the pictures for our pages in our book by having each student pick a letter.  Then they searched the classroom to find other real objects that began with the letter they had chosen.  We grouped the letters together around the trigger image picture.  Then we opened up the app and took a picture of our collections with the trigger imaged engaged.

word_for_p

The children then imported the picture they took into the app Strip Designer from the camera roll.  We used a simple frame to title each page.  They then used the balloon option in this app to label the objects in the picture.

words_for_O

I imported all the pictures into Explain Everything in alphabetical order.  Then we had Owen, Celia, and Elsa narrate the story!

words_for_b_Austin

We then saved it to the camera roll and I uploaded it to our Youtube channel to share with the world!

 We hope you like it!

3 D Space Fun! Augmented Reality Style!

We have been having a lot of fun with our Space theme!  We created this movie trailer in iMovie using the pictures we created using a green screen app called Green Screen by Do Ink and the NASA 3D Spacecraft app.  We took all the pictures we created and popped them into the storyboard in the iMovie app and then worked together to add the captions!  We LOVE our movie trailer.  We have watched it numerous times!   We hope you will watch it too!

IMG_5265

We used the movie trailer to get our imaginations going.  We brainstormed together and talked about the things we had learned about space.  Then I encouraged the children to write a story about their adventure in outer space.   I printed off a colour print of the picture we created for each child and added it to a writing frame.  The children seemed to find it very easy to imagine themselves in the story when they saw themselves in outer space.  They wrote and wrote and wrote!

IMG_5267

IMG_5257

The stories are amazing.  I have put them up in the hallway.  Please come and have a look!

IMG_5253

I attached the movie trailer to the creative writing using the Aurasma app.  The rocket ship picture is the trigger picture for our movie trailer.

IMG_5263

If you have the Aurasma app loaded on your idevice and you follow our channel you will be able to activate the movie trailer!  Our channel is called mrsantonsclass.

IMG_5266The stories are amazing and a lot of fun to read!

Come and take a trip with our Mountain View Astronauts!

Fun in Space! Using Green Screen and Augmented Reality!

photo 4

We have been having a lot of fun with our new green screen app called Green Screen by Do Ink and an app I found last year called NASA Spacecraft 3D.

download (2)

The NASA Spacecraft 3D app is an amazing augmented reality app!  You can download a trigger image from their website, and use it to view an amazing variety of spacecraft that NASA has deployed in space over the last few decades.  My favorite is the Curiosity spacecraft that went to Mars.  I showed the children a few examples of the various spacecraft and then they chose one to pose with.  Last year we took the pictures with the classroom for a background but this year we have green screen technology!  We used our improvised green screen made of construction paper on the back of our classroom door to take the pictures this time.  Now we can add an background from outer space!

photo 1 (7)

We quickly were reminded that you cannot be wearing green!

photo 3

When we put the picture taken with the green shirt as one of the images in the green screen app we found out that part of Celia had disappeared!   She quickly put on her sweatshirt and we retook her picture! photo 4

I have downloaded a variety of images from the internet to use as our background images.  The children picked the image they wanted to have in the background too!  Now I have to figure out how to add videos to our green screen images!

photo 1 (5)

The NASA Spacecraft 3D app is fun because not only does the trigger image allow access to a variety of spacecraft it also show them moving!  It also gives a lot of information about the various spacecraft!

photo 2

We will be using these images as a starting point to generate some creative writing!

photo 1 (6)

It is a bit easier to imagine yourself in space when you have a picture that shows you there!

photo 2 (1)

Watch for the voyages of the Starship Mountain View!

To boldly go where no child has gone before!

(I love Star Trek!, Can you tell?)

Fun with Hungry Fish and QR Codes!

IMG_5073

We have been having fun with a new to us app called Hungry Fish by Motion Math!  It is a great little app that lets the students practice their addition facts.

download

We have the free version loaded on our iPads at school which only has the addition operations displayed.

download (1)

If you want you can  download the paid version to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division operations.

IMG_5074

The object of the app is to join bubbles with addends that make the total!.

IMG_5077

You can add more than two or more bubbles together to make the sum!

IMG_5075

We have also been having fun using the shortcut QR code that I created for our class website.  The children can use the Scan app and hold the iPad over the code and it takes them right to our class website.  I have them scattered all around the classroom so the children can access them easily!

IMG_5078

That is a lot easier than trying to type in the urrl! QR codes are fun!
