100 Day Fun!

IMG_4829

We celebrated our 100th Day of school last week!  Take a look at this yummy cake!  Thank you to Owen’s family for the cake! To celebrate our 100th day of school we did a variety of activities that focused on 100.  We read 100 stories together!  The children got together as partners and in some cases groups of three and read stories to each other.  Each time they read a little book or story they had to write the title down on a post-it note and sign their names.  Then we put them up on a chart.  We actually read 104 stories!

It was lots of fun to watch them reading so many stories!

I think they had lots of fun reading together!

We also made 100 day necklaces out of fruit loops!  Yummy!

We also made 100 trail mix!

The children counted out 10 of each type of fun food and sorted them on their 100 day place mat.

Then they ate them up!

We worked with our buddies to create our 100 year old stories!  I found an app called the Aging Booth that takes a picture and ages the person in the picture by 100 years.  I wish you could have heard the giggles when we shared the pictures.  The Big Buddies came and helped the students complete the activity about when they were 100 years old.  IMG_1558

Can you guess who these handsome gentlemen are?

We used the app to age our big buddies as well!  Then we shared our 100 cupcakes with our buddies!  Thank you to Kalem’s family for the 100 little cupcakes.  They even had the numbers 1 to 100 on them!

 That’s a lot of cupcakes!

100!! Too Much Fun!

IMG_2705On Friday, we celebrated 100 days of school!  We did a lot of different things!  For fun, I downloaded an app called Aging Booth that ages your picture.  We had a lot of fun taking pictures and then aging the picture 100 years!  I managed to print them off and the children worked with their buddies on Friday to complete an “If I were 100” page.  They are great!

We had a lot of giggles seeing how we would look in 100 years!  My picture was very scary!

Working together we read 106 stories!  The children worked as partners to read stories to each other and then recorded the title of the story and their names on a post-it.  Lots of reading!

We made fruit loop necklaces by counting 10 Fruitloops into 10 plates and then threading them on a string!  We also made a trail mix with 100 things.  We checked our counting!

Both snacks made it home, I hope!

We had two lovely 100 day cakes!  Thank you so much to the two moms who volunteered to make them!  The cakes were both gobbled up.  We shared the cakes with our Big Buddy class as well.  I posted pictures of the cakes on our class Twitter page!

We have also been having fun in science.

We did an experiment we call Hole in the Hand.   The brain is tricked into thinking that you have a hole in your hand.  We also had fun with playing tricks on the eyes with the Eric Carle book,  Hello Red Fox.  In the book, a little frog invites different animals to his birthday party.  When he invites each animal the mother fox questions his perception of the color of the animal.  He tells his Mom that she has not looked at his friend hard enough.  The children look at the picture of the green fox with a small black dot in the center of the image and then after counting to 10 move their eyes to the  next page and a red fox appears on the blank page!  You can check out Eric Carle’s website to have him explain  the exact way it works.

Hopefully, the children shared this experiment with you at home!

This post is mostly about 100 day but it is also the 100th  post of this blog!   Very special for me!  I have learned a lot about technology and hopefully you have enjoyed seeing little snapshots of what happens in your child’s life at school.

When I started this blog, with the coaxing of my friend, Shelley, I had no idea how much I would learn and how much fun it would be!  The purpose of the blog was to share our journey using the iPads during our initial project.  It has evolved along the way and become a way to share what the children are doing and the different new things we are learning –  including technology.  The children often ask me to put their work up on the blog and it is lots of fun to see their faces in the morning when they see their hard work is there for everyone to see!

I have learned about a lot of new things along the way!  Way too much fun!

100 Day Fun!

IMG_1546

Yesterday we celebrated 100 Days of School!  It is one of my favourite days because it is fun to see how much they have learned in 100 days!  The first thing we did was read 100 stories together!  When I told them we were going to read 100 stories they were a little surprised and didn’t think it was possible.  When I lay out the process they jumped onboard!  The children got together in little groups of two or three students.

They found a story to read from my collections of books and got together in a cosy spot and read the book together.  Then they recorded the title of the story on a post-it and signed their names under the title.  Then, they put the post-it up on the chart.  Working together we read 100 stories in no time at all and the added bonus is that everyone got lots of reading practise too!   We actually read 104 stories!

The children got lots of practise counting to 100.  We counted 100 fruit loops to make a necklace and we counted out 10 different kinds of little snack items to make a 100 item snack!  Yum!  We wrote about 100 too!

Having 100 dinosaurs would definitely be a problem!

We have been working with place value concepts relating to 100 day and I have managed to put some new links on the WIKI page from the ABC Ya! site.  The children tried them out in the lab and seemed to really enjoy them.  I am sure they would enjoy showing you at home.  The most popular app right now in the class on the iPads is Base Ten Fun!

The 100 Number  Chart game and Base Ten Bingo can be found on the ABC Ya Site.  I have created a link to these games on the WIKI.   Check them out!

I Wish I Had 100?

Today we talked about 100.  If we could wish for 100 of something what would we wish for…. If we could eat 100 things what would it be?  What kinds of things would we prefer not to eat 100 of…. What could we make 100 of?  We got some really neat answers.  The children brainstormed items for each category.  Then they chose the ones that matched their personal preferences to complete the story frame.  The final item was to indicate what they liked best about our 100 day celebration.  They liked the 100 day cake, the 100 fruit loop necklace, the 100 trail mix snack, reading 105 stories together, and making 100 stamps on the iPads the best. To culminate the activity we mounted their story frames and then they had to surround their story frame with 100 stickers!  10 sets of 10 equals 100!

I promised to post more of the snowmen pictures made by the parents at our iPad open house!

Have to admit that I really miss the iPads!  Wish I had 100 of them!

100 Day Activities!

Today was our 100th Day of School!  It was a very busy day!  Each child got a necklace that said “I Survived 100 Days of School” to wear today!  We did a lot of things centered around 100.  As a group we read over 100 stories.  The children partnered up and read stories to each other.  After reading the story they copied the title of the story on a post-it, signed both their names, and then added the post-it to a big chart.  It didn’t take long to get over 100 post-its on the chart!  That’s a lot of reading.  As they were working on the reading, small groups practiced counting to 100 by counting out 100 fruit loops to make a fruit loop necklace.

As today was anti-bullying day, everyone got a pink T-shirt to wear and we went to an awesome anti-bullying assembly!  Very impressive!  We saw some amazing skits, singing, dancing, and presentations.  Lots to think about…

When we got back from the assembly  the children took their 100 collections that they had brought from home and put them on a 100 grid.  We took pictures of all the collections.  Because the desks were full of our collections we had our lunches as a picnic on the carpet!  Then we continued to work on 100 by counting to 100 and doing a 100 dot to dot.

We used the iPads today  to show 100.  We used the Doodle Buddy app.  The children used the stamp tool to make 10 sets of 10 stamps.  We got some really cool collections of stamps!

We also made a 100 “trail mix”.  The children counted out 10 of 10 different food items for 100 things to eat.  We put them on the grid to make sure we had 100 and then we got to eat 100 things!

And then we sang Happy 100 Day to Us and had some cake!  Yum, yum!
